AMD continue to challenge Intel in processor war
31/01/07 - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has taken more of Intel's share of the computer processor market, analysts Mercury Research have revealed. AMD had a record-high 25% share for the final quarter of 2006.AMD's performance in the fourth quarter of 2006 is an increase from the 23.3% market share they had in third quarter and is a near 4% increase on the final quarter of 2005.
Dean McCarron, founder of Mercury Research, was in doubt as to how good these results are for AMD, he explained, “This is the highest share AMD has ever had.”
The sales and profit margins of AMD and its rival Intel have been affected by an industry price war. However it has affected AMD more because Intel has introduced newer and more expensive chips that have allowed them to offer discounts on older products.
Intel remains the largest player with a 74.4% of the market in the fourth quarter of 2006, however this has dropped steadily from 77% at the end of 2005. It is Intel's lowest share of the $30bn computer processor industry for 11 years.
