Asia and Africa catching up with rest of world in net usage

27/04/07 – The e-readiness rankings produced the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) have shown that Asian and African countries' net usage is catching up with that of the developed world's. The rankings attribute this partly to cheap broadband access now being common and widespread in those parts of the world.

However the EIU does still believe that there is a lot of work left for the inhabitants of these countries to do before they receive all the benefits of the internet.

The EIU report is an annual study of how easy the internet is to use in nearly 70 countries, known as e-readiness.

The rankings review the ease and affordability of the internet for citizens of those countries and any legal issues around net use in those states as well.

The EIU report advised that as well as the increase in availability of broadband services, a range of education and policy initiatives by governments in Africa and Asia had also caused the increase in e-readiness.

This is part of a worldwide trend where the technology for people to access the internet is now cheaper and more readily available.

Broadband only costs 1% of monthly incomes in most of North America and nowhere in the continent does it account for more than 10% of monthly income.

This year's report has shown that e-readiness has increased globally and this can be attributed to a change in the way the EIU has calculated e-readiness.

As a result of this the scores for nearly all of the nations in the top rankings of the report fell, the UK dropped to 7th place with Denmark listed as the nation with the most e-readiness.

Robin Bew, editorial director of the EIU, advised that the nations near the top of the rankings could not afford to stand still in terms of e-readiness.

He said: "Those at the top of today's league table cannot be complacent - changing technologies, and attitudes to technology usage, mean that hard-won advantages can be quickly eroded by nimble-footed rivals."
