Ban on new internet cafes in china for rest of this year

07/03/2006 - An order from the Chinese government has forbidden any new internet cafes from opening this year. The ban is made through a government order that has been obtained by the state news agency Xinhua.
As well as banning internet cafes, the order, issued by 14 government authorities, will also crack down on gambling through online games.

Any new internet cafes that have already been given approval must be completed by June as part of the order according to the news agency.

The Ministry of Information and Industry advises that the country currently has 113,000 internet cafes.

The ban on new cafes is part of a crackdown on internet addiction in a country where net usage increased by 30% to 132 million last year users according to figures released by the state Internet Network Information Centre.

The government has attempted to encourage people to use the internet for educational and business purposes.
