Blu-ray's future is unsure for early customers
Blu-ray who appear beating HD-DVD in the upgrade battle likened to Betamax and VHS, have hit a hurdle after announcing an upgrade to their systems. Owners of the earliest models of the player will not be able to access some features on future discs due to insufficient hardware on their machines. The new features on the upgraded machines include picture-in-picture options and are designated as "profile" 1.1. machines as opposed to the earlier 1.0. profile.
Later this year the Blu-ray company will also offer profile 2.0, called BD Live, allowing the players with the feature to connect to the internet to download related content, such as ringtones, trailers and photos.
The only player with the technology to adapt to all three profiles is Sony's Playstation 3.
Feature films will still play on all players, but access to extra features is limited, and older players can not be upgraded.
This revelation may boost the appeal in the rival HD-DVD – the company which appeared to be losing the battle after Warner Brothers announced they would release future titles on Blu-ray format only.
