British man wins £100,000 in virtual game
09/02/07 - The cryptic virtual reality game Perplex City has been won by Andy Darley from the UK. He was the first to solve the game out of the 50,000 players from 92 countries who were participating and it earns him the £100,000 prize.Perplex City was an alternative reality game (ARGs) where competitors had to solve clues on the web, television and in newspapers and use real world events in a treasure hunt for the Receda Cube, an "artefact" buried in a hidden location.
Mr Darley found located the cube in Wakerly Great Wood in Northamptonshire on February 2, but he says it wasn't until recently that he thought he stood a chance of actually wining the game. "I was playing for the puzzles and the stories, but it was only a few days ago that I thought I was in with a chance," he said.
"As I pulled the Cube from the sticky, wet clay, and even afterwards as I was waiting to return the Cube, all I could think about was how bizarre the whole thing really was," he continued
ARGs are games that take place in both the real and virtual world and have been growing in popularity since the first game, The Beast, took place in 2001 to publicise the film A.I. In Perplex City, puzzle cards available over the internet and in shops were used alongside music with clues in the melodies and elaborate real life parties to help solve the game.
Some of the rarest cards have been sold on online auction sites for prices in excess of £200. A new Perplex City game will begin later in the year.
