Buildings tagged with virtual artwork

09/08/07 – Researchers in Scotland have used image-matching algorithms to display virtual content on real world buildings. Using the process they have been able to create a guide of Edinburgh that lets people find the virtual artworks around the city using their mobile.
In a linked project the researchers have also been able to use the technology to allow a blog to automatically update showing the author's location.

Dr Mark Wright of the Division of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh said: "It's about using a camera phone as a magic wand."

The project is called Spellbinder and allows people to use a camera phone people to photograph the location and then send the image via a multimedia text message.

Spellbinder then consults its database and returns the image with the extras added to it.

The technology can also be used for virtual games replacing the need for locations to be physically bar-coded or for participants to download software.

One game that has been developed requires players to wear a large individual image on their body and protect a given "base" or location.

The players then score points by getting snaps of the images on their rivals clothes or base.
