Coloured bar codes to be added to DVDs

23/04/07 - Colour barcodes that can hold much more information than current barcodes will be added to DVDs later in the year. The new system is capable of holding double the amount of data that the traditional black and white striped system can.
The colour barcodes that have been developed by Microsoft are one of a number of new products that are attempting to be included on packaging.

Using the new system up to 3,500 alphabetical characters can be placed in every square inch of the barcode.

Microsoft has advised that the new barcodes can interact with webcams and mobile phones that have integrated cameras.

Eight different coloured triangles that are placed left to right with each shape aligned from point to base or vice versa make up the new barcodes.

It is the combination of colours and the patterns created that is read by the software that decodes the data.

Gavin Jancke, the developer of the High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB), advised that the system had not been developed to replace existing barcodes.

"It's more of a 'partner' barcode," he said. "The UPC barcodes will always be there. Ours is more of a niche barcode where you want to put a lot of information in a small space," he said.

The system has been liscened by ISAN, the voluntary numbering system used for identification of audiovisual works, and it will begin to appear on DVD disks for XBOX 360 games at the end of the year.

The barcodes can hold information such as website address or email addresses that can then be scanned using the camera in a mobile phone.

There are other rival systems for placing encoded data onto printed material being developed.

Fujitsu has displayed its steganography technology, which places data in plain sight and takes advantage of the eye's inability to see the colour yellow properly.
