Europe hangs up on landlines
Research has revealed that nearly a fifth of Europeans have rejected landline phones. At the top of the list of nations hanging up on traditional phones is Lithuania with 48% of households going mobile; Finland was second with 47%.The research was carried out by the EC's statistics office Eurostat and the results demonstrate how mobile phones have become essential to everyday European life.
According to the report there are now 95 mobile phones for every 100 Europeans.
Across all 25 EU member nations the average amount of households that are mobile is 18%.
The research has shown that there is a big divide between older traditional European nations and the so called new Europe.
Older members of the EU including the UK and Germany have fewer mobile-only homes, 13% and 11% respectively, compared to new states such as the Czech Republic which has 42%.
The difference between the 'old' and 'new' Europe could be due to fixed line penetration in many former communist members not being as high as it is in nations such as France and the UK.
While the figures have shown that there are a number of European households eschewing landlines it has also shown that they are not being rejected entirely.
The number of lines per 100 people has increased from 43 in 1995 to 48 in 2005.
