Google Earth to blur sensitive images of India

05/02/07 –Google Earth is about to get a bit smaller following security concerns raised by the Indian Government. Google will blur strategic Indian locations such as government buildings and military sites following a request from the country's President, Abdul Kalam.
President Kalam had first voiced concerns in 2005 about the service that lets users view sophisticated satellite images of locations around the world. The Indian government was fearful that extremist groups could use the images to plan terror attacks in the country. Google Earth had shown aerial photos of the Indian parliament, President Kalam's residence in New Delhi and airfields.

According to reports in the Times of India the move follows a meeting between science and technology ministers from the Indian government and representatives from Google. Other governments have also requested that Google blur or remove images of sensitive areas in the past.

Google Earth was launched in 2005 and is a downloadable program that contains a database of satellite images of the planet with image resolutions varying from 15 meters to 15 centre meters. The program also presents 3D representations of important places and buildings.
