Intel to open plant in China

27/03/07 – The computer chip manufacturer Intel is to give a major boost to the high-tech industry in China, by building a £1.3bn plant in the country. It is the company's first integrated wafer plant in Asia.
The plant is to be situated in the city of Dalian in the north-east of the country and production will begin in 2010 and the plant will use 90-nanometre technology.

The company already employs over 6,000 people in China and has factories making memory chips in Shanghai and Chengdu.

Following the development of the new plant Intel will have invested $4bn in China.

Intel boss Paul Otellini said that the decision to build the plant demonstrated the importance of China in the global market.

"This project confirms... the strategic importance of China in our global strategy and the IT industry around the world," he said.

"China is our fastest growing major market, and we believe it is critical that we invest in markets that will provide for future growth to better serve our customers," continued Mr Otellini.
