Kids in America to dance their weight away

01/02/07 - The state in America with the highest rate of childhood obesity is planning to use a computer game to whip its children into shape. Schools in West Virginia will use Konami's "Dance Dance Revolution" to cut its children's waistlines.
This follows research that suggested that playing the game regularly could help curb obesity in children. The state is planning to put the dancing video game in all of its public schools.
In the 24-week study, children that played the game at home for a minimum of half an hour did not put on additional weight and saw a reduction the risk factors for diseases linked to obesity. The research was carried out on 50 overweight or obese children aged between 7 and 12.
Children who did not play the game saw their weight increase by on average of 6 pounds over a 12-week period. When they did start using the game their weight stopped increasing over the second 12 weeks of the study. Food intake was not measured as part of the study.

The research was sponsored by the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency and policyholders' children were the primary subjects of the study. Emily Murphy from the West Virginia University School of Medicine said of the plan, "It's going to allow kids to be active in an after-school activity that's not sports."
