Media giants slam Google over piracy

13/02/07 - The search engine Google has been criticised by some of the largest media groups in the world who claim the site hasn't been doing enough to stop pirates trading in illegal material. It follows allegations that Google sold adverts to websites that offered pirated copies of films.
Media giants including Time Warner, Disney, Viacom, GE, Sony and News Corporation attacked Google over the issue of piracy. The claims revolve around a civil action brought by the media groups two businessmen believed to have two websites to trade in pirated films and TV shows.

It is alleged that Google’s search engine directed users to the sites named in the action and it's claimed that Google sold adverts to these sites. The media groups are believed to have met with the search engine and implored the company to do more to combat piracy.

Google has not to commented and it was not named as a defendant in the case the media groups made against the businessmen. Google has recently made a number of agreements with film and TV producers regarding copyrighted material uploaded onto its video sharing site YouTube.

Recently Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple the makers of the iPod, caused a storm by insisting music producers should remove the anti-piracy software from its products. Jobs argued that this would allow people to play downloaded music on all digital music players, something that is not possible at the moment.
