Report reveals Blog censorship

The annual Reporters Without Borders study of press freedom has revealed that bloggers in police states are as likely to suffer from censorship as journalists. One of the worst countries for repressing bloggers is China, where 50 people have been imprisoned because of what they have written on the internet.
The crackdown on freedom of speech on the web has come as governments realise the role that it can play in promoting democracy.

In sixth annual worldwide press freedom index Eritrea was ranked bottom in 169th place below North Korea and Turkmenistan.

In a statement Reporters Without Borders advised that they were not surprised by the trends shown in the report: "There is nothing surprising about this.

"Even if we are not aware of all the press freedom violations in North Korea and Turkmenistan, which are second and third from last, Eritrea deserves to be at the bottom."

The index is the result of questioning journalists, researchers and jurists, freedom of expression and human rights groups in 169 countries.

Iceland, Norway and Estonia are the three highest ranking countries on the index and Europe was the best performing region overall.

However Russia was ranked at 144th and Reports Without Borders advised that there had been very little progress towards free speech in the country.

They highlighted the murder and of the investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya and the lack of media diversity as key factors.

Reporters Without Borders stated that "serious, repeated violations of the free flow of online news and information" had caused many countries to slip down the index.

Vietnam was one of the worst performing with eight people currently imprisoned because of the content of their blogs.
