Shoppers avoid companies targeted by hackers

17/04/07 – Companies that have been targeted by hackers and had credit card information stolen are being shunned by consumers. A survey has indicated that customers avoid shops or firms that have been victims of hackers.
53% of the people surveyed by the security firm Secerno said that they would stop spending at shops that had suffered security compromises.

The survey questioned 1243 people and found that 95% were worried about their data being accessed by hackers and the majority of them would want to know immediately if their data had been stolen.

Paul Davie, chief executive of Secerno, said it was the regularity and scope of the thefts by hackers that was concerning the public.

"This is not just happening occasionally, these guys are scoring big," he said.

The research follows TJX, the US Company that owns TK Maxx, discovering in December 2006 that hackers had stolen 45 million credit card records from its database.

The survey has also revealed that 58% of people questioned would like to see financial institutions and governments increase their responsibility for the consumer data that they keep.

In the US many states have passed laws that make it compulsory for companies to reveal when the have been targeted by criminal hackers.

Mr Davie believes that this law will be adopted in Europe and that the public's perception of hackers must change.

"That requirement is going to come to Europe at some point. The public perception is of a hacker being some kid in a bedroom that does this for fun, but these kids have grown up," he said.
