Virtual worlds pass $1bn mark

20/03/07 –A report by Screen Digest has shown that the massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) market in the west is now worth more than $1bn (£511m). The research shows that millions of people now inhabit virtual worlds and that they are becoming "significant platforms."
The report, which studied the market in North America and Europe only, advises that subscription MMOGs make up 87% of this revenue.

This has been stimulated by the popularity of subscription MMOGs such as World of Warcraft and the report expects subscription revenues to hit $1.5bn by 2011.

Report author Piers Harding-Rolls, advised that the diversity and strength of individual titles were responsible for the growth.

He said: "Over the last couple of years, certainly in Europe, the MMOG market has mushroomed partly due to the success of World of Warcraft,"

Mr Harding-Rolls also advised that change was stimulated by a number of factors including the community and social aspects of MMOGs.

He added: "These companies aim to build online communities, increase brand awareness and gain access to key consumers that can be monetised falling offline advertising revenue."

The report also predicted that the increased availability of broadband and next generation consoles would drive MMOG growth to10 million subscribers by 2011.

However the growth of MMOG is smaller than that in markets such as 'video on demand', analysts expect that market to be worth $11.4bn in revenues in four years.
