Wiki enters the Oxford English Dictionary
19/03/2007- The word Wiki, used to describe web pages that can be edited by anybody who accesses them, has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). It was added along with 287 other new words that met the dictionary's criteria.The word originates from Hawaiian phrase 'Wiki Wiki' meaning 'quickly' or 'hurry up' but it's meaning is different for a vast number of people who use the internet.
The most popular example of a website that utilises Wiki technology is the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia.
OED chief editor John Simpson admitted that they had been observing the growth of the term for several years before selecting it.
In a statement he said: "Words are included in the dictionary on the basis of the documentary evidence that we have collected about them. A while ago, this evidence suggested that 'wiki' was starting to make a name for itself.
"We tracked it for several years, researched its origins and finally decided it was time to include it in the dictionary,"
Graeme Diamond, the OED's principle editor of new words, advised that the concept that Wiki is similar to the objectives used by the dictionary.
"Its long tradition of working on collaborative principles means it has welcomed the contribution of information and quotation evidence form the public over 150 years," he said.
